What is Being Tested?
In the Critical Reading (verbal) section, the test maker indicates the test measures reasoning ability, vocabulary, and comprehension rather than specific high school subject material.
In mathematics sections, the test maker indicates the test measures how well a student can apply learned techniques (numerical, graphic, spatial, symbolic, and logical) to both new and familiar situations.
The writing section tests a student’s ability to identify errors in grammar, diction, usage, and conformity with Standard Written English; identify sentence and paragraph errors; and improve sentences and paragraphs. The written essay on the SAT measures a student’s ability to develop and express ideas effectively under timed conditions. Students are required to develop, support and present a point of view with specific examples and clarity.
The SAT/PSAT is essentially testing the students ability to take a new form of test. Something that is very different from what is taught in school. A particular score simply reflects how well a student understands and plays this new game. Instruction and practice in the skills required for this game are neither taught nor used in high school.
